Sex and Sexuality Counseling, Therapy

Everyone’s entitled to a good sex life. Yet, for some, sex is one of the most challenging areas to navigate. Some of us get hung up on performance issues. Others carry an abundance of fear related to sex. For many, sex imposes guilt, shame or self-judgment that makes it difficult to pursue or enjoy. Perhaps like no other issue, sex can make us feel inadequate, different, ashamed and isolated. The good news is that therapy can help.
No one begins therapy knowing how to talk about sex. Often, our culture, peer groups, religious affiliations and families impose notions that are in conflict with discussing sex or pursuing a good sex life in a healthy way. These influences can permeate the bedroom, dictating what we should and what we shouldn’t want. By discussing sex and sexual issues with a therapist, individuals and couples can hope to combat some of these obstructive influences and move towards a more conflict-free relationship with sex.
Therapy can help with a number of sexual issues. Here are just a few examples:

  • Nervousness about sex
  • Sexual performance and impotence
  • Lack of sexual attraction
  • Uneasiness about sexual orientation and identity
  • Concerns about gender identity
  • Body image issues
  • Promiscuity and obsessive sexual activity
  • Concerns about fantasies and fetishes
  • Recovery from sexual abuse or trauma
